Health Alert: Radiation Protection
“A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” – Proverbs 22:3
We have received many inquiries about potential radiation dangers from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant disaster in Japan. Here are a few questions and answers.
Q. Should we be concerned?
A. Probably not, but just in case…we prefer to take the boyscout approach and be prepared.
Q. Are we in danger from radiation?
A. The experts disagree, ranging from no danger to serious danger. I would rather err on the side of caution. Because information from the media and regulatory agencies has been contradictory and vague, we think it best to contemplate the worst-case scenario:
“There should be much more attention paid to the spent-fuel pools,” says Arjun Makhijani, a nuclear engineer and president of the anti-nuclear power Institute for Energy and Environmental Research. “If there’s a complete loss of containment [and thus the water inside], it can catch fire. There’s a huge amount of radioactivity inside – far more than is inside the reactors. The damaged reactors are less likely to spread the same vast amounts of radiation that Chernobyl did, but a spent-fuel pool fire could very well produce damage similar to or even greater than Chernobyl.”

The Chernobyl nuclear accident exposed large populations to radiation. Currently people around the globe may be at a similar or worse risk.
Q. Should I take potassium iodide?
A. Potassium iodide is part of every civil defense prep list. It is intended for emergency measures only and can be harmful if taken in too large a dose. By saturating the thyroid with iodide you can prevent it from absorbing radioactive iodine-131. The thyroid is particularly vulnerable to that substance.
However, many people are hypersensitive to this product. Also, taking iodide will not protect against harm in other parts of the body.
Safer Alternatives: Iodine from kelp is more easily absorbed by sensitive people than potassium iodide tablets and less known to cause adverse reactions.
For all clients we have available tincture of Fucus vesiculosus, a product made from Sea Kelp that contains iodine. We will also have tincture of Elemental Iodine available by next week. Instructions will be included on the labels. Start taking it now as it takes weeks to months to saturate the thyroid with iodine. As with any product, please use caution when taking.
Note: The levels of iodine in iodized salt are not enough to saturate your thyroid. There are more bio-available ways of doing this. Information for how to take the iodine can be found here: http://imva.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=25b08cc8b5ebaf472984d04d0&id=a45dfd02fe&e=f15a0e2426
Q. Can homeopathic remedies protect against and/or treat radiation injuries?
A. Homeopathic treatment has been extremely effective in treating radiation injuries. During the Chernobyl days homeopaths helped many desperately sick people. I have personally witnessed some wonderful recoveries with homeopathic treatment from serious radiation injuries that were caused by overdoses of radiation.
You may find it helpful to have ongoing homeopathic “constitutional” treatment to strengthen and support the channels of elimination in the body. Heavy metal chelation is also beneficial for removal of radioactive particles.
Homeopathic Home Remedy Kits: In an emergency, there is no time to go to the store. Many remedies you need are not found in the health food stores. Have a homeopathic remedy kit on hand, preferably a 100-remedy family kit. There are numerous remedies in the kit that have been used to treat the effects of radiation. As an added benefit, homeopathic remedy kits last for a lifetime if shielded from excess temperatures and moisture, and can be used to self-treat your family for acute situations for years to come with a little study (or you can call your practitioner for an acute consultation). You can order one of these from our office.
Q. What else can I do?
In addition to remedies, foods like alfalfa, sprouts, leafy green vegetables, lentils, legumes, miso, brown rice, high fiber, whole grains, seaweed, wheatgrass and more have been used with success to help lessen the effects of radiation exposure. Remember to take foods only from organic food sources- you do not need to burden your body with having to eliminate more poisons than necessary.
