Introduction

Kat took a course of Ciprofloxacin (Cipro, Cetraxal, Cipro XR, Otiprio, Cipro in D5W, and Ciloxan), a Fluoroquinolone antibiotic, for an acute bladder infection. She was suffering from cipro poisoning! She has so many of the drugs’s well known side effects, including some lesser known ones.

This Fluoroquinolone antibiotic has many, serious black box warnings and should only be used for “serious bacterial infections — such as certain types of bacterial pneumonia — where the benefits of these drugs outweigh the risks“. Her doctor was obviously unaware of such warnings, as unfortunately, so many doctors are. She was given this for an out of the blue UTI – it wasn’t even recurrent, serious or life threatening.

Other fluoroquinolone antibiotics include levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), ofloxacin, gemifloxacin (Factive) and delafloxacin (Baxdela).
